State-of-the-Art Stem Cell & PRP Therapy

At Colorado Orthopedic Consultants, provide advanced techniques in regenerative medicine. These include platelet rich plasma, and stem cell treatments.

Conditions which may benefit from Stem Cell Therapy

  • Sports injuries
  • Tendinitis such as golfers elbow and tennis elbow
  • Arthritic joints
  • Ligament and meniscal tears
  • Plantar fasciitis or other foot and ankle conditions
  • Labral tears or rotator cuff tears
  • Tendonitis or arthritis in the hand or wrist
  • Osteoarthritis or cartilage tears
  • Overuse syndromes
  • Nerve pain or nerve damage
  • Spine or Neck degenerative disc disease

Understanding Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, is derived from your own blood. Blood is drawn in the office and then processed to separate out a layer which is very high in platelets and growth factors. Platelets are a component of blood involved in clotting which also happen to contain a large number of growth factors and healing factors. By concentrating the platelets and growth factors together, this can be injected under ultrasonic guidance for variety of diagnoses to help the body’s own natural healing process. The entire process takes about 30 minutes. d be a last resort.

Understanding Stem Cell Treatment

What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are specialized cells within human body which have the capacity to change or differentiate into different tissues of the body thus assisting in regeneration of those tissues. In orthopedic surgery, most of our focus is on the musculoskeletal tissues including tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and bone. Stem cell treatment can be used to treat damage or injury to all of these musculoskeletal tissues. Some of the diagnoses include tendinitis, partial tendon tears, ligament tears, and cartilage damage or arthritis. We see these types of injuries throughout the upper extremities and lower extremities as well as within the spine including the low back and the neck.

Benefits
Stem cells can be guided into becoming specific cells that can be used to regenerate and repair diseased or damaged tissues in people.

There are a variety of products for “stem cell treatment” in clinical use today.  The three main sources are bone marrow derived stem cells, adipose (fat tissue) derived stem cells, and amniotic allograft products which consists of tissue derived from healthy donors.  It is incorrect to label these products simply as “stem cells”.  While these products may contain cells, some of which may be true stem cells, they are also rich in powerful anti-inflammatory factors and growth factors which augment the body’s own healing response.      These products will not “grow new cartilage or tendon”.  Rather they assist in the natural reparative process.  These products have been used for decades to promote healing in a wide variety of applications across many specialties.

The choice of which product to use is determined by your surgeon with your input.   At Colorado Orthopedic Consultants, we offer the entire gamut of regenerative products.

Bone marrow derived stem cells are obtained by aspirating bone marrow

from the pelvis, either in the operating room or in the office. The bone marrow is then processed in a special centrifuge to filter out the stem cell components. Adipose derived stem cells are obtained by aspirating fatty tissue from around the abdomen, either in the operating room or in the office. This tissue is processed using a special technique to obtain stem cell components.

Amniotic allograft products are derived from amniotic tissue. These products are harvested from amniotic tissue from healthy living donors who have been carefully screened. In addition to live cells, these products contain numerous powerful growth factors and anti-inflammatory factors which assist your own body’s ability to heal and regenerate damaged joints and tissues. An advantage of amniotic derived tissue is that it does not require invasive procedures such as those that are needed to harvest your own tissue for bone marrow or fat derived stem cells products.

At Colorado Orthopedic Consultants, your physician will carefully consider your personal situation and diagnosis in order to formulate a personalized treatment plan. Your evaluation will begin with a complete history and physical exam followed by an appropriate diagnostic workup. This may include x-rays, MRI, or other appropriate studies. We emphasize conservative treatment first. Any sort of invasive treatment such as injections or surgery should be a last resort.
